URBAN ICON & HIP HOP QUEEN EVE TO SELL M·A·C VIVA GLAM LIPSTICKS AT HARLEM M·A·C STORE & REACH OUT TO TEENS IN NEW YORK URGING THEM TO PROTECT AND EDUCATE THEMSELVES AGAINST HIV/AIDS NOVEMBER 28th
World AIDS Day Appearances Exemplify Star's Continuing Support for the M·A·C AIDS Fund as a VIVA GLAM spokesperson
(NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 27, 2006) - M·A·C AIDS Fund (M·A·F) today announced that in line Eve's support of the VIVA GLAM Lipsticks, which donate 100% of its proceeds to HIV/AIDS programs and services, she will be selling the lipstick at the M·A·C Harlem store on November 28th. In addition, later that day she will visit an after-school program from one of the Fund's grantees, Henry Street Settlement, which delivers a wide range of social services and arts programming, many related to AIDS, to more than 60,000 New Yorkers each year. Eve's in-store appearance and charity visit are to help shine the spotlight on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and raise awareness about HIV prevention as World AIDS Day approaches on December 1st.
"It is so important that youth understand they must be their own fiercest advocates and protectors," says Eve. "HIV/AIDS is a real threat, so they need to be educated and aware, both for their own well-being and that of the greater community. I am so glad that I can work with the M·A·C AIDS Fund to bring these messages home."
Her visit to the Harlem M·A·C store, 202 West 125th Street, is an effort to connect with her audience and the young, hip demographic of M·A·C Cosmetics in order to decrease the stigma associated with AIDS within that community, as well as drive home the fact that African-American women are among the fastest growing sector of the population with HIV/AIDS. She will be selling lipstick from the VIVA GLAM Lipstick series, which has generated over $81 million dollars since its launch in 1994, and for which she is a current spokesperson. She will also be spending time with her fans and signing autographs.
Eve will then head down to the Lower East Side of Manhattan and the Henry Street Settlement, which the M·A·F has awarded $190,000 this year. These funds help sustain and support expansion of Henry Street Settlement's Peer Training Institute (PTI) and their Community Consultation Center (CCC) which is a leading provider of AIDS Mental Health Services for New York City's Lower East Side. On the agenda Eve will attend an HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention After-School Workshop led by teens from the PTI and then join the PTI street team to help teens distribute HIV-prevention materials on Avenue D.
"It is so important to have someone with Eve's credibility speak to the urban and youth communities in New York and around the country about HIV/AIDS," says Nancy Mahon, Esq., Executive Director of the M·A·F. "Her thoughts and feelings carry weight and really impact the way they think and act. We're thrilled she's a part of our M·A·C VIVA GLAM team."
"With the support of M·A·F, Henry Street is addressing this crisis with innovative initiatives that train kids to become peer educators and advocates for prevention" said Verona Middleton-Jeter, Executive Director of the Henry Street Settlment. We welcome and applaud Eve for her effort to highlight this problem and join us in combating it."
