M·A·C AIDS FUND donates $250,000 for relief efforts in Africa and Asia.
New York, NY, October 31, 2002 - A host of international dignitaries, diplomats and Hollywood elite was on hand at last night's United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Poverty Eradication Awards 2002 which honored John Demsey, President of M·A·C Cosmetics and Chairman of the M·A·C AIDS Fund, among others, for the Fund's outstanding achievement in the fight against poverty through its support of people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Among the evening's highlights which included Master of Ceremonies Danny Glover (UNDP Goodwill Ambassador), an address by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a special performance by Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph, John Demsey presented a $250,000 check on behalf of the M·A·C AIDS Fund to the UNDP for its continued efforts in the fight against AIDS in Africa and to launch a new AIDS initiative in Asia and the Pacific. The evening concluded with surprise performances by famed recording artist Stephanie Mills and Broadway star Carolee Carmello.

The M·A·C AIDS Fund began its partnership with the United National Development Programme in February 2000, shortly after the UN Security-Council cited HIV-AIDS as a global threat, by providing $500,000 for an awareness campaign in Africa. Through the VIVA GLAM campaign - the organization's primary charity vehicle -- the M·A·C AIDS Fund has raised over $25 million to help men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS worldwide. Of the $250,000 presented by Demsey on behalf of the M·A·C AIDS Fund, $100,000 will support UNDP's work in Africa, and $150,000 will be used to develop a new campaign to confront the AIDS epidemic in Asia and the Pacific, which is threatening to become the largest in the world. By the end of this year, the M·A·C AIDS Fund will have contributed $1 million to UNDP HIV/AIDS programmes.
John Demsey's leadership through the M·A·C AIDS Fund in the global fight against AIDS and poverty serves as an excellent template for successful corporate collaborations with the UNDP. This partnership has allowed M·A·C Cosmetics to offer much needed assistance to the organization, which in turn provides the knowledge, experience and resources that can enable people to build better lives.
"We are honored to be involved with such an important and relevant cause. Poverty and AIDS are threatening the stability of our global economy, however, I strongly believe together we can confront these challenges by effectively communicating the adverse effects of this deadly epidemic on our global community," states John Demsey.
The M·A·C AIDS Fund was established by M·A·C Cosmetics, Inc. in 1994 to support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. Introducing its first VIVA Glam lipstick that same year, M·A·C decided that every cent of the selling price of the VIVA GLAM lipsticks would go to The M·A·C AIDS Fund. With a total of four VIVA GLAM lipsticks now sold worldwide, M·A·C, its employees, its retail partners, and its customers together have provided over $25 million to date for The M·A·C AIDS Fund. The M·A·C AIDS Fund is the heart and soul of the company with its employees giving their time, energy, and talent to help those affected by HIV/AIDS worldwide.
