Food and Nutrition Programs
MAF recognizes that there is an increasing need for resources to support food and nutrition programs for people living with HIV/AIDS due to rising food costs, decreased government funding, and an increase in demand for services. The primary goal of this initiative is to positively impact the nutritional health of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). In addition to strengthening the body’s natural ability to fight and combat infections that can be lethal to a person living with HIV/AIDS, proper nutrition maximizes the effectiveness of anti-retroviral drug treatments and also reduces and offsets the negative side-effects of medication. Proper nutrition is also a key to treatment adherence and compliance and has been cited by clients and medical professionals as an important component of an integrated treatment and prevention program. Addressing the nutritional needs of people living with HIV/AIDS is a key component of an integrated approach to addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S.
Who is eligible to apply for funding?

What does the Canadian Community Grants Program fund?
The Canadian Community Grants Program addresses the link between poverty and AIDS by supporting non-profit organizations that provide vital direct services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to support programs and services that enable individuals to live as independently as possible, despite the many challenges posed by their health status. Examples of the kinds of services eligible for funding under this program include, but are not limited to: efforts to improve public policy and public services, food and nutrition, prevention and education, treatment adherence, transitional housing, and targeted outreach to high-risk populations. Our aim is to support direct services and advocacy most needed in communities most affected by HIV/AIDS, as evidenced by HIV/AIDS incidence and prevalence. What is the grant range?
Grants range from $5,000 to $50,000. Typically, our grant will not represent more than 20% of the budget of the program for which an organization is requesting support. The actual grant amount will be based on a number of factors including general operating budget, the number of clients served, the incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in your community, proven program effectiveness, the size of your program, and the likelihood of ongoing support for the program from other sources. Please not that this is a competitive grant opportunity, and while you may apply for up to $50,000 CAD, we award very few grants at this level. We encourage you to consider requesting less than the maximum if you have not been awarded this level of funding from the M∙A∙C AIDS Fund prior to this year.
